I go up to the university sometimes just to talk to my friends and I see them at least 2 nights a week, but it's still very lonely.

That being said, after 2.5 months I'm down 2%. Some of you might say, "that sucks", but I'm quite happy with my progress. My time table doesn't call for me to consistently make money for another 10 months. I figure that even if I'm down 6% at the end of 6 months, I way ahead of the curve. I'm confident that in a year I'll be making money. Maybe not as much as the university paid me, but I'll have money coming in while my equity and experience grows.

This is so much tougher than I thought. But it's also very challenging and I look foward to each new day. Now I've got to do something about the loneliness. I think I'm going to teach a few hours a week at a language school just for the social contact.

Missing social contact? Yes, but if you were a writer, you would not have much social contact either. Maybe you should try a chatroom?

And if I were a particularly bad inmate, I'd be in solitude. But I'm neither a writer nor an inmate. The essence of teaching is having close contact with people everyday.

But if I were a Maytag repairman...

Nice thought, but I need more experience first. I'm not a snake oil salesman so I'd want to truly be able to help others with full confidence that I'm helping, and not hurting, them.

In the meantime, I started working with adult Emiratis trying to get into grad school in western countries. It's only a couple of hours 4 nights a week and it's making me very happy to help them and to interact with them.

Makedon

Makedon,

I noticed that wonderful and all too familiar refreshing Greek flag.

Your english seems excellent so I am assuming perhaps you spent some time in USA or Canada and possibly moved to Greece.

I have been trading 2 years now with an excellent trading record. I would like to trade from Greece at some point. Do you have any idea how the tax structure works.

Also what is your experience with the internet connections. I was there last summer and hard a hard time finding a stable, fast connection. Of course, I was not at a residence. i had to rely on the connections that the hotels had and also on the cards that you can buy from periptera. Those produced a lot of viruses.

Do you have any experience with vodaphone's wireless card service?

Regards

Re: Who Is Trading For A Living And Making Money?

I have an interesting idea..... I am proposing this because I was very moved by comments from a fellow member who is forced to leave his home once in a while to compensate for the large share of personal contact he enjoyed before....
The idea :
Use this programme:
http://www.skype.com/download/

and make something like a chat place where everyone can talk and discuss the market(not only) when they feel lonely.

I hope this is not taken as advertisement. In any case I will be happy to hear what you think of this

PS: The discussions seems to have strayed from the original topic...It is really interesting still - Who Is Trading For A Living And Making Money?

Re: Who Is Trading For A Living And Making Money?

Howdy, traders...Here's my half a cent, thanks for listening:

If you come to these forums hoping to find someone who has something to sell or give away, i.e. a signal service or training program, then putting up with all these anonymous "professionals" who sardonically bicker back and forth may be worth your time while you assess which service or product to investigate further. But if you are a competent adult merely seeking to learn thing or two and share information, a forum predicated on the exchange of helpful business information is no place for personal ego battles and snide commentary. Good god, Currencia and whoever else...if you are making a living through trading this particular market, congratulations. Have some fun and lighten up. You don't need to be a jerk to be profitable.

I trade for a living. I also have other sources of income, as does my wife, but at least 65% of my monthly nut has come from currency trading for the past eight months. My personal history and subsequent psychology play the largest role in my being able to be consistent. I am happy with a very modest living, and my trading style is based on one thing: Long term survival. I have never equated forex with instant riches and want to make sure that in ten years I am still in the game and still learning. I always want to learn more. I am an only child and this has led me to be very happy working alone, and I do not mind spending many hours in front of the screen...I get a lot of reading done while I wait for trades to develop or for the specific conditions I seek to present themselves. I learned the hard way like most do...but I was lucky enough to realize I would need to set aside at least a years worth of income and paper trade full time before I could create a trading plan that fit me well. One of my other careers is in music, and I find the way this market behaves around areas of S/R, Fib/pivot points to have a groove to it that makes tech. analysis something I use very lightly. Basically, (and this is nothing new ) IMHO the idea of losing money makes people freak out/panic at specific price zones and as a trader, it's up to you to isolate yourself from the herd at that point and not go over the cliff. Sometimes it's simple: Buy dips and sell peaks, and there are some indicators /calculations that work well for finding those. While most of the money I have made in forex recently has been catching the "second wave" after a funamantal release, I also have been suprisingly consistent for the past six months or so fading micro-trends at the appropriate S/R and pivot levels for 4-10 pips a pop. This is not an exact science to be sure, and saying that there is a musical pulse to this market may sound flakey, but I have never had success in forex from the "rigid system" ideas that permeate forums. There is nothing rigid about forex. Also, while nothing I have said is really original, still most people are horrified to think that that they must think for themselves in this market or in life, for that matter. Thats why so many want to find software that tells what to do and when, or a signal service that takes the responsibility off of them to engage the market personally and own their own decisions. Being flexible and adaptive AND taking full resposibility for creating your own financial condition/trading style is a tall order and I think you have to "unlearn" a lot of social conditioning to feel comfortable with that choice. Otherwise, one is looking for the safest bet, a guaranteed monthly income model like any other job, and this is the wrong persuit for anyone who wants a mostly hands-off income stream. But, there is no clear-cut personality type required to succeed in this market, though independent thinkers are encouraged to apply! I appologize for the long post....don't mean to rant. But I think it could be of some value to recognize that there are succesfull traders out there who have a different take on trading the market than the guarded Masters of the Universe types who claim to have an "answer" or two they won't share , but appear to be over-represented here and should not constitute the overall demeanor of the MoneyTec forum.

Good luck all, and take care...

-Ash

Cool Re: Who Is Trading For A Living And Making Money?

I am...And have been for quite a while.

Hello All,
It has been a while since my last post, in fact I just found the time to get in YESTERDAY...some of you will recall my "you have got to be kiddin" post on losers blaming others, when clearly there are NO VICTIMS, ONLY VOLUNTEERS....
There is always a way to trade and make money, for yourself for your company and most importantly for your clients.

I been in the business for just about 10 YEARS now and I will have to say, I make more good calls than bad.
Short trades are my way. Not short as in SELL positions but short as in Get In and Get Out. That is if it is about making MONEY NOW.

I would rather buy call or put options with a bit of time on them and pay attention to all that is happening around me, this way I have plenty of time for EVASIVE MANEUVORS if need be.

In my experience, and I have a good track record with a lot of happy people with me...Common Sense and Accountability For Your Actions will get you a good amount of the way there.

Re: Who Is Trading For A Living And Making Money?

Hello!

I'm not quite trading for a living, but programming autotraders for a living.....so in a way i guess ea's trade for my living.....

It's not metaquotes language but trade station easy language, but i still like to call it expert advisors.

However i do trade a small account, you can check every trade on my website, it's updated every 10 days. At the moment it's in german only, but here's the link:

http://www.forex-trading.at/account.htm

Additionally i trade another account, if someone's interested, i can post my trades in the forum.

Best regards,

Sassa

Question Re: Who Is Trading For A Living And Making Money?

For those of you who are successful in your trading, what trading software or educational programs did you use to get to where you are? I have seen a lot of really expensive options or fx trading programs online or that they try to sell you at a seminar, but I don't think I have to spend $10,000 to learn this.
I have learned some from books, webinars, etc., but I still haven't been consistently successful. With the market going all over the place, it seems that when I look at indicators that say one direction, the stock or currency goes the other direction.

Any insight would be great!
Thanks!
