This thread was started on the assumption, based on many
of your statements, that one should do the opposite of
whatever I might recommend. So I was going to illustrate
that if one were to do that, one would lose a lot of money
over time.

Come now Bob, you know that 'take the opposite side' will never work for me, even a broken clock is right twice a day, besides which we're both long!

I invite you to quote my post which says your system is a losing system. I once said a while back that I did not believe any automated system was consistently profitable, not just yours, and I stand by that statement. If your system turns out to be different then kudos to you, you'll deserve it. How long the market will survive for private investors trading through brokers is debateable, profitable automated systems will be able to be traded by anybody, now that's a frightening thought!

Mick,

I can understand most of the points you've made, actually.
There is a time in my life when, if confronted by my initial
posts on this thread, I would have been triggered and
would have been a detractor of, well, me.

Our differences lie in the fact that we have obviously tried
different approaches to trading and hence have formed
different opinions about what works.

This is good, because it's what makes markets. We wouldn't
want everyone thinking the same way. We need people
entering based on different interpretations of the news,
looking at different timeframes and indicators, etc.

My systems are open to scrutiny, and I should have known
ahead of time that others would find fault with what I am
doing without first paying me the respect of looking closely
at what I offer. This is just life in the big city.

One's skin needs to be thick in every business.

But now, I'll entertain what you have to say. I think
I'm open minded about trading ideas, but, like you,
I will say something is a bad idea if I think it is.

It's some honest and serious exchange of trading ideas that
this forum site is all about. Let's get to it.

On automatic systems that really work...

I think it will take a while for people to realize one is working
really well, if one arises.

Skepticism that results are being faked will have to be
overcome. Big financial institutions are slow to change.

People trust computers to fly airplanes but not trade their
money -- how curious.

I've said it before and I'll say it again. People don't trust computers to fly planes. Sure, the plane goes on autopliot. But if I was sat on a plane waiting to take off and was told that no pilot was there ( human being) and that a computer was going to fly me from a to b, I'd be straight out of my seat.

I don't deny at all that a computer can/does do this.

But what if it all goes wrong. Watching all these documentaries on air crash investigations lets me know that there have been numerous occasions that a failure has occured and the only reason people survived was pilot skill.

An auto trend following system would have worked well in 2003 but would have been a much poorer bet in 2004.
