Attempted Hacking / Advice, Please!

Can anyone offer advice to someone not-too-technical here, please?

I was out for an hour this afternoon and came home to an email from MoneyTec which said "Your account on MoneyTec Traders Community has been locked because someone has tried to log into the account with the wrong password more than 5 times. You will be able to attempt to log in again in another 15 minutes. The person trying to log into your account had the following IP address: 62.253.128.14"

It's very good of MoneyTec to be able to let me know that someone's so repeatedly been trying to get into my MoneyTec account (even if it's not so easy to understand why!!) ... really I'm pretty impressed. Thank you, guys. But what can I do about it?

Is there any way for me to find out to whom this IP address 62.253.128.14 belongs - and in particular whether that person is another member here?

What (if anything) should I do?

Any advice from anyone, please?

Re: Attempted Hacking / Advice, Please!

Thank you very much indeed, Yasir! I'll certainly do as you suggest. Does what you've kindly printed out here mean that the guilty party was necessarily using a computer in Cambridge, do you think?

Re: Attempted Hacking / Advice, Please!

Hi Tim,

IP Address: 62.253.128.14
Node Name: cmbg-cache-4
Location: Cambridge, UK
Network: NTL Internet

Unless you know a techie (or potential hacker), I suggest you contact your network service and have them check it out for you. They hate hackers as most of us do.

This may be a proxy server, however there is usually enough info provided at the proxy to track it to its true source.

If it is the hackers IP Address, Moneytec has all member info in their database.

Good Luck,
sraklo

Re: Attempted Hacking / Advice, Please!

Thanks very much for your help, guys. I'll do that, too.

Sraklo, I hope you sort out your own situation with MoneyTec!

Tim

Re: Attempted Hacking / Advice, Please!

... but it can be hacked computer ....
hackers have hacked computers around the world and they use "redirectors" thru another computers, so this IP can be only hacked computer ....
or proxy server ...

Re: Attempted Hacking / Advice, Please!

Yes, I think I see what you mean; but I'm uncomfortable enough about it to want to try every last resort and avenue to get to the bottom of it, whatever it takes. My legal knowledge is a bit rusty but it seems very likely to me that an offence was actually committed here (even if the offender was ultimately unsuccessful in his purpose which may not have been particularly harmful anyway) and I feel like taking that as seriously as I can. Doesn't do to encourage this sort of thing.
