MT4 Expert

Hi I'm just in the process of programming an automated system but I cannot get the MT4 expert to print to log files. Can somebody please help me with this?

Does your MQL4 expert advisor print to the journal tab (in the terminal window)? If so on the StrategyBuilderFX 4.00 version of MT4 which I use my journal log seems to copy over into a new log file (.log) in the "log" file folder once per day.

If your EA is not printing to the journal tab log would you share your Print coding? Also have you run the EA live or just in Tester mode?

Thanks mate for your response. I'm running just in tester mode also I'm using the metaquotes version not a broker version. I should be able to develop an expert without using a broker version of MT4 shouldn't I?
I can share the print code with you.

Is the Print function is supposed to output to this location "Meta Trader 4\experts\logs"?

How do you debug?

Yes you should be able to develop an expert advisor using the metaquotes version.

Your print comm output goes directly into the "journal tab" of the tester window. In tester mode it appears that the journal log is not automatically saved but see my next comment.

About debugging in tester mode: If you need to save the journal information for later try this. On the journal page right click. Then select Open. It should save a .log file in the "\tester\logs" folder.

My Print function work when I run the system tester. I checked the logs under the "\tester\logs" folder viewed my output. What I can not do is find where the print function outputs to when I attach the expert to a chart; to enable testing in real time. I have checked the "experts\logs" folder but my output is not there .

I think the live expert-advisor print function works this way.
1. The real-time expert-advisor print shows up in the journal tab of the terminal window.
2. Once a day (or perhaps when you close metatrader) the journal (in the system window) trading entries transfer into a daily .log file at "\logs" (top level should be "Meta Trader 4\logs" for you). Also once a day (or when you close metatrader) the journal (in the system window) expert advisor system activity entries transfer into a daily .log file at "\experts\logs". So try checking both files the following day.

On the newest version of Metatrader I am just running my first live expert advisor starting last night so this is my best guess on how it works. If I am wrong someone else please respond.

1. The real-time expert-advisor print shows up in the experts tab of the terminal window.

Sorry I just realized that the experts tab the journal tab in the system window are two different logs. Squidler does your "\experts\logs" get a new .log file every day?
