pip value calculation

I know this topic has been talked to death. Please bear with me as I am new to this. I am trying to get profit loss value on a historical basis. I have a spreadsheet for 4 years of data on a 1 hour interval. The pairs I am interested in are GBP/JPY EUR/JPY and EUR/GBP
None of these have USD as one of the currencies making the job a little harder. Is there a comprehensive site where I can get exact formulas to calculate the $ P/L at that time of the day? Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Re: pip value calculation

How does P&L comes in?

Anyway, see the pic below, esp the pip cost column. Not sure if it is helpful.

You mentioned the 3 pairs GBP/JPY, EUR/JPY and EUR/GBP.
So if you see GBP/JPY, each pip would be worth 0.9 of what you see.
And if you see EUR/JPY, each pip would be worth 0.9 of what you see.
And as for EUR/GBP, each pip would be worth 1.76 of what you see.

So in excel, you can just add an extra column e.g. "Actual GBP/JPY value" with value as =GBP/JPY_Col * 0.9.

PS.: The rates were captured at this point of writing. The numbers are just a rough gauge but should not vary too much too soon.

Re: pip value calculation

Thanks for your help Foam. This is exactly what I meant. I wasn't clear about the P/L. I was basing it on a 1 lot investment. Anyway, your explanation was definitely helpful.

Unlike the XXX/USD pairs, the crosses have a variable pip value. You say you want to know what the historical pip value was. The answer you received was wrong, you can look at what your platform is showing as pip value now, but you certainly won't know what the pip value was for GBP/JPY last year unless you do some calculations. It's not hard, but I suggest you do a google search and help yourself. If you do it that way, as opposed to me telling you, I suspect you'll remember how to do it.

Re: pip value calculation

Calculating PIP Value
  • For GBP/JPY AND EUR/JPY:
1000/(USD/JPY_ASK_PRICE) at the trade closing time.
  • For EUR/GBP :
10*GBP/USD_ASK_PRICE at the trade closing time.

P.S. USD_ASK_PRICE suggested only for USD nominated accounts. If not, instead of USD we take JPY and GBP crosses with deposit currency.
