Question Automated Trading System Courses?

I'm new to this forum and to forex, although I have traded futures and options (mainly positional). I was pleased to find an impartial forum like this available to forex traders and hope to contribute to the discussions.

I was wondering if anyone knew of any courses(online, books, video etc.) for developing and testing automated trading systems? The only ones I've heard of are "Winning with Automated Trading Systems" by Jack Schwager and "the Jack Schwager Trading Course" (the latter also covers other topics like money mgmt, etc.) but I don't know if these are worthwhile buying. I'm not interested in buying a blackbox system, but rather learning how to design and test my own system.

I would appreciate any feedback on these courses or recommendations on any others that show how to develope and test customized trading systems.

Cheers

Ross I have had no luck finding information on automated trading systems since I have gotten into Forex. I do know that the software the "pros" are using to setup automated trading is called Trade Station. It has its own programming language built in, so you can set up all sorts of automated actions. Good luck and let me know if you find any further info!

Automation

AC38 -

I spent a frustrating year trying to use Tradestation to backtest FX and develop systems....They do not provide spot fx data so I ended up changing over to CQG, which is far more expensive, but far better software in my opinion.

My real problem is in trying to automate a system...ie...to allow it to trade without having to push any buttons. It seems ludicrous to me that in a market as liquid as FX you cannot do this, when you can in futures markets!

Any help appreciated.

Meta trader

Guys you should also look into Metatrader at metaquotes.net .
Kind of similar to Trade Station, where you can run a automated trading system. The language is slightly different though.
They offer free trial of the system

Or Visual Trader from cms: http://www.cms-forex.com/
That is also free, but the charting servers dont operate on weekends. They dont have a back tester like metatrader [thats not a bad thing though!!], but you can transfer data to XL thru DDE.
It does reguire a lot more memory than metatrader.

About 6mths ago TS began carrying Spot FX data ... great addition however still a long way 2 go for them (very Un-Tradestation roll out) specifically when u backtest a strategy the P&L comes out in the currency rather then back into $$ ... nice 2 have 2 go back 2 ur calculater and convert Yen back into $....... either way one of the big +'s is that they have a "Look inside the bar" option for those of us who use a wider time frame... they will allow the strategy to look at every tic w/in, say a 15 or 30 min bar.
