Question Money remittance services - how do they work?

I've been wondering how money remittance services, such as used by migrant workers to send money back home, work. How do they manage to get relatively good rates (better than when sending an international wire transfer by bank) for such low amounts (I think typically, only a few hundred $ is sent)?

Thank you in advance for your insights.
