Well, I'm not a security consultant, but engaged in a lot of such problems for my own business and site.

Why you need intrusion defense? do you own a web site and worried of Dos attack? Exactly which server of yours is expose to internet and under such attack? If this is a web server, I will show you some hosting companies claimimng to defend intrusion.

And for email security, you may easily use an IMAP service instead of POP3.

If you want to host your web page and emails by your self, there are a lot to talk about. Any how, sysco switches do alot for blocking incomming attacks. There are also software for blocking attacking IPs. In case of massive DDos attacks, non of them work, but youur business may not be a target of suc hattack.
